You could eat every night in a different Thai restaurant in the lower north shore and still be going next Christmas. I grew up at a time when the local Chinese was ubiquitous - as still seems to be the case in country towns - but now it is definitely the green chicken curry.

It can't be easy for these businesses to differentiate themselves, but I bet they can't afford to get it wrong either. In my mind I have 'stop-on-the-way-home take-away Thai', 'eat-in-Thai', 'slap-up-meal-Thai' and 'quick-before-the-movie-Thai'.

Thai Nine is 'eat-in-Thai' - the ambience is calm and Asian, the service friendly and prompt, and the quality of the food warrants lingering rather than scoffing out of take-away plastic. Dishes are just a little bit fancier than the norm - many of the same dish names but just made that little bit more carefully. And some of the more unusual ones are worth diverting to too - especially the crystal prawns. We've enjoyed the set menus for groups - though the higher priced versions are infinitely better than the cheapest. Not bad wine by the glass, either.

Food was OK, nothing extraordinary. We had a salmon that was too sweet. The shrimp dish was too small, it seems more a size of an appetizer rather than a main course. The restaurant is beautiful with great atmosphere. Excellent service.

Thai Nine is certainly striving to be an upper end Thai restaurant in a sea of very ordinary ones. Decor is much nicer with the expected accompaniment of Thai statuary and art. Service is prompt and attentive, even though this place gets really busy. I have traveled to Thailand many many times, and I find the food to be very good, although without the often super spicy extra that you would get in Thailand. The menu has all the usual suspects with some pretty innovative things, especially in the entrees. Thai Nine is definitely more expensive than the hole in the wall places all over C/NB/M, but worth it for a superior experience.

Thai Nine is everything great about Thai food. Fabulous, fast service. Predictably good food - the usual suspects on the menu plus specials for the more adventurous. Good value - particularly for the area.

What makes this place extra special for me is the restaurant itself. Particularly on a summer evening.  The windows that form the outside walls are thrown upon so that the breeze can flow through. The lighting inside is particularly kind to those who have smiled too much and the general ambiance is very relaxing. Tables are just close enough that you can spice up your conversation with tid-bits from surrounding tables but there's a great feeling of intimacy too.

You can't go past the Pad Thai here. Have it as a takeaway or get 10% discount for cash on collection.  Nice.
